Portugal 2 - 0 Switzerland Video Highlight All Goals - European champions Portugal beat Switzerland in Lisbon to finish top of European Qualifying Group B and reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia. A draw or a loss would have left Portugal in the play-offs but an own goal from Johan Djourou and a goal from Andre Silva took Portugal through. France beat Belarus 2-1 to win Group A, with Sweden finishing second despite losing 2-0 to the Netherlands. The Dutch, who finished third in the 2014 World Cup, are eliminated. They needed a seven-goal win to nudge Sweden out of the play-offs and scored two first-half goals through Arjen Robben, but it was not enough.

France have qualified for the 2018 World Cup and will be among the favourites for the tournament, despite securing their place with an unimpressive performance. It looked as though Les Bleus would sail to the three points they required to hold off Sweden at the top of Group A when Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud struck within the space of six first half minutes. However Anton Saroka replied just before half time and should have bagged another after the break, but France held on to the delight of the Stade de France.

Netherlands 2 - 0 Sweden Video Highlight All Goals - Netherlands captain Arjen Robben has retired from international football after his side missed out on a place at next summer's World Cup in Russia. Robben scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Sweden - but they were not enough for the Dutch to reach the play-offs. The Bayern Munich forward said: "It hasn't been an easy decision but I am 33 and now must give my full focus to my club." Robben made his debut in April 2003 and won 96 caps, scoring 37 times.

Belgium signed off their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign with a comfortable victory over a determined Cyprus. Roberto Martinez's side had already sealed their place in Russia next year way before Tuesday night's fixture in Brussels. Martinez named a relatively strong squad with Chelsea team-mates Eden Hazard and Michy Batshuayi both in the starting line-up.

It meant manager Gareth Southgate can now start planning in earnest for Russia but could not cover up the cracks in an England performance that was lifeless, uninspired and mediocre.

England - who are now two points ahead of Slovakia as they prepare to meet at Wembley on Monday - began to carve Malta open with ease and added two more in injury time, substitute Danny Welbeck steering in Kane's pass before the striker added his second with virtually the final kick of the game from Marcus Rashford's delivery.
