The Spanish government pledged to stop a poll declared illegal on a day of violent protests and unrest. Barca took the decision to play behind closed doors 25 minutes before kick-off, with thousands of fans outside. The league leaders cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory. Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people in north-eastern Spain, has its own language and culture and Barcelona is its capital.

The champions, who had failed to win three league games at the Bernabeu, took the lead when Isco converted Cristiano Ronaldo's through ball. He then curled home Marco Asensio's pass in the second half to seal the win which takes Real up to fifth place. Espanyol had chances - most notably when Gerard Moreno hit the post after a Casemiro mistake.

Undeterred, BVB continued on the front foot and reclaimed the lead thanks to Shinji Kagawa's delicious dink, but pushing for a third before the break, Aubameyang spurned a chance he would usually take when on-on-one with Marwin Hitz.

Ousmane Dembele hobbled off injured on his first league start, as Denis Suarez clipped in Barca's leveller.

And Karim Benzema flicked up Marcelo's cross and turned defender Samuel Umtiti to fire home a second with Barcelona rarely looking like coming back. Real eased off in the second half, with the cup practically wrapped up, and Barca improved slightly as a result, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez hitting the woodwork.

He was booked for taking off his shirt to celebrate and shown a second yellow shortly after for a dive - before Marco Asensio scored an excellent third. Ronaldo felt he should have had a penalty when he went down under pressure from Samuel Umtiti, and appeared to shove the referee in the back after he was shown the red card.

Forward Silva, signed from Porto, netted from the penalty spot with 15 minutes left of the match in Catania, having earlier had a goal ruled out by a VAR review and been denied by some inspired goalkeeping from Dani Gimenez. His intervention from 12 yards came eight minutes after Betis substitute Fabian had scored with a magnificent strike. But Betis won it in the last minute when VAR again worked in their favour, penalising Hakan Calhanoglu for a handball that allowed substitute Antonio Sanabria to score from the spot.

They doubled their lead when Isco calmly slotted in from eight yards after a neat one-two with Gareth Bale, who started ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. New £75m striker Romelu Lukaku tapped in before Marcus Rashford scuffed wide.

The Europa League winners were given encouragement by Lukaku's strike, despite rarely threatening the Madrid goal in the previous hour, and could have scored a barely deserved equaliser through half-time substitute Rashford with nine minutes left.

Blues manager Ronald Koeman was pleased by his side's performance just three days after the 2-0 aggregate victory over Ruzomberok in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
