It took no time at all for Dortmund's front line to click into gear in Augsburg, Andrey Yarmolenko's sumptuous backheel – his first Bundesliga goal – putting the visitors ahead early on. Augsburg hit back almost instantly, though, Caiuby ghosting into the box and heading past Roman Bürki. Undeterred, BVB continued on the front foot and reclaimed the lead thanks to Shinji Kagawa's delicious dink, but pushing for a third before the break, Aubameyang spurned a chance he would usually take when on-on-one with Marwin Hitz.
